Underwater Treadmill

Underwater treadmills capitalize on the power of water. They create an extremely efficient and effective way to train, condition, and recover from injury. From sports medicine professionals working with top athletes to physical therapists working with elderly patients, combining a treadmill with water is an incredibly versatile tool to improve the range of motion.

Integrated treadmill

Our underwater treadmill is integrated into the pool floor and comes with two removable handrails that can be positioned on each side, in the front, back, or removed completely. This motorized treadmill can achieve top speeds of 8.5 mph and is adjustable in 0.08 mph increments starting at 0.69 mph. Running on the SwimEx underwater treadmill against the SwimEx current increases the intensity of the running experience, with the added bonus of a core workout.

The integrated treadmill can be installed as an option in the following SwimEx pool models:

And our small, medium, large, and extra large plunge pools.

Underwater treadmill and pool versatility

SwimEx pools are known for their versatility – 99-speed variable current, different height floors, multiple workstations – offering more rehab options beyond the underwater treadmill.

“For post-op athletes, I try to get them in the pool early – as soon as stitches are out. Even if they are doing some of the same exercises they would do on land, it feels different to them in the pool. We’ve gotten pretty creative with how we are using the workstations. And everyone loves getting in the water, even the athletes that aren’t swimmers!”

Underwater treadmill benefits

An underwater treadmill mimics the motion of running on land, with water providing a natural resistance, with less stress on the joints. You get the same cardio training, fat-burning benefits, and an equally intense core and leg workout. The water’s resistance is exponentially increased the faster you run or walk. In other words, the harder you work, the harder your workout will be, and the better the benefits.

When you combine an underwater treadmill with an adjustable speed water current, you can tailor the workout to any individual fitness level or a specific goal. It’s a powerful combination!

Underwater treadmills offer many benefits, including:

Reduced joint impact: Hydrotherapy reduces the pressure on joints. The buoyancy of water supports the body and reduces the force of gravity. Underwater treadmills are a good rehab and exercise option for people with joint pain, arthritis, or injuries such as runner’s knee.

Improved balance and coordination: Walking or running on an underwater treadmill can help to improve balance and coordination without the fear of falling. Gait training with an underwater treadmill is ideal for people who have suffered an injury, stroke, or other neurological conditions.

Post-injury rehab: Underwater treadmills can be used for many post-injury rehab protocols, such as ACL rehab and foot surgery rehab. The hydrostatic pressure of water helps to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Better running mechanics: For athletes recovering from an injury, running on an underwater treadmill in a pool with a laminar water flow helps to ensure proper running form. The laminar water flow optimizes forward body lean without a fear of falling forward.

Improved cardiovascular fitness: Running on an underwater treadmill gets the heart rate up and improves circulation. When you run against the water flow, you get the added bonus of a core workout. In a pool with an adjustable current, you can also increase, decrease, or pre-program your workout to fit an individual’s routine.
